Baptism is no mere social convention, but the Sacrament in which Christ Himself purifies, justifies and sanctifies your child for eternal life. (1 Peter 1:23) We rejoice with you in the birth of your child and look forward to welcoming him/her into the family of God and the communion of the Holy Catholic Church!
 

The Catechism teaches: “The fruit of Baptism, or baptismal grace, is a rich reality that includes forgiveness of original sin and all personal sins, birth into the new life by which man becomes an adoptive son of the Father, a member of Christ and a temple of the Holy Spirit. By this very fact the person baptized is incorporated into the Church, the Body of Christ, and made a sharer in the priesthood of Christ.” (CCC 1279)
 

Preparations for Parents – Infant Baptism

First Baptismal Prep Session – We ask parents to watch the Reborn Baptism video: The Mission to Love: 7 Keys To Catholic Parenting via FORMED a free resource available to our parish family. Then meet with Denise Gorski, Director of Evangelization to discuss your family background, faith life and the video and reflection questions. Sessions can be scheduled to meet in person or at our parish offices.

Second Baptismal Prep Session – Attend the Understanding & Celebrating New Life through Baptism session where we discuss the Sacrament of Baptism within the holy Mass and how to live out the Baptismal call and mission within your family. Godparents are also welcome to attend. This meeting is scheduled on every first Tuesday of the month at 6:00 pm at St. Joseph Catholic Church at 2565 Third Street in Trenton. In case of a holiday weekend, the meeting will be moved to the second Tuesday of the month.

Once both parents have completed the two Baptismal sessions you can contact Sue Surcek, Parish Administrator, to schedule a date for the Baptism of your child at 734-283-1366. Baptisms are performed during Mass and can be scheduled for the Saturday Mass at 5:00 pm or Sunday Mass at 9:00 am. If you live out of the Riverview area and are not a registered, active parishioner of St. Cyprian Church, a letter from the Pastor of your current parish confirming you are a registered, active parishioner is necessary to proceed with a Baptism. This is standard practice within the Archdiocese of Detroit.

Preferably, both parents and Godparents are to be practicing Roman Catholics who can support the child in the Catholic faith. One parent must be an active, practicing Catholic who has received all of the Sacraments of Initiation (Baptism, Holy Communion and Confirmation). At least one Godparent must be a active, practicing Roman Catholic and at least 16 years old and one Godparent may be of Christian witness.If there are two Godparents, they must be one male and one female.
